Lore & Background

Bethany is introduced in the Gospel of John as the home of Lazarus, a follower of Jesus, and his sisters Mary and Martha. When Lazarus fell ill, the sisters sent word to Jesus, saying, "Lord, behold he whom Thou lovest is sick." Jesus intentionally delayed his journey for two days, telling his followers, "This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it." Upon arriving in Bethany, Jesus found that Lazarus had been in his tomb for four days. It was here that Jesus declared, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me will live, even though he dies." At the tomb, Jesus wept, then prayed, and called out, "Lazarus, come out!" Lazarus emerged, still wrapped in his grave-cloths. The narrative states that many of the witnesses to this event "believed in him." Six days before the Passover on which Jesus was crucified, he returned to Bethany, where Lazarus attended a supper served by Martha. The chief priests then considered having Lazarus put to death because so many people were believing in Jesus on account of this miracle.

In Their Own Story

The rope dangles in the corner of her old room, swaying without wind. She remembers the prayers that sounded more like commands, and the silence that followed her final choice. Now, she walks the halls again, not to forgive, but to pull the monsters close enough to see their fear.

Reader's Guide

Bethany is a versatile character defined by her unique tether mechanic. Instead of shooting projectiles directly at enemies, she fires ropes that lock onto targets or items. This allows her to drag foes into danger zones or retrieve pickups from afar. Her playstyle rewards positioning and patience, as she must manage the tension of her connections. Her signature item, The Pact, reflects her tragic backstory by increasing damage at the cost of health. Players often pair this with other tether synergies to maximize crowd control. While she lacks raw speed compared to agile characters, her ability to manipulate battlefield geometry makes her a strategic powerhouse for experienced players seeking to master spatial combat. Unlocking her requires defeating Mom's Heart while holding key items—a ritual that mirrors wrestling her memory from the depths of Isaac's mind.
