Lore & Background
Ultra Greed is the evolved form of the sin of Greed, no longer a simple, crawling creature but a massive, armored behemoth. Its body is encased in a thick, golden shell, with coins fused into its flesh and a gaping maw that spews wealth as a weapon. This transformation reflects the core theme of Greed Mode itself: the more you take, the more you become a vessel for avarice, ultimately facing a version of yourself twisted by desire. The boss's design echoes the biblical warning that the love of money is the root of all evil, turned into a literal, crushing force.
In Their Own Story
The vault door slams shut with a sound like a tomb sealing. The floor is a sea of coins—pennies, nickels, dimes—glinting under a single, sickly light. They shift, stir, and from their center rises a figure: a grotesque suit of gold armor, each plate fused with screaming, melted faces. It roars, and a shower of pennies erupts from its chest, each one a tiny, sharp-edged missile that pings off the walls. This is the end of the line for the greedy—a final judgment where your own hoard becomes your enemy, and every coin you ever picked up now wants you dead.
Reader's Guide
Ultra Greed awaits at the end of a full Greed Mode run, after the final wave of enemies in the Shop. The fight has two phases. In the first, Ultra Greed stomps around the room, each footfall sending shockwaves rippling outward, and fires a spread of coins you can sidestep if you keep your eyes on the gaps. It also summons Gapers and other chaff to clog the room. After you deplete its health bar, it enters a second phase: it grows larger, gains a shimmering golden aura, and begins firing a continuous stream of coins in a rotating pattern, like a sprinkler of death. It also spawns enemies more frequently. The key to victory is maintaining distance, using the environment for cover (especially the shop counters), and focusing on high-damage items—tear rate and piercing shots are your best friends here. Defeating Ultra Greed unlocks Greedier Mode, a harder variant, and also contributes to unlocking certain endings and achievements, such as the Keeper character. The fight's impact is significant: it provides a definitive conclusion to the Greed Mode experience, rewarding players with a sense of closure and a fresh challenge to sink their teeth into.
