Polyphemus
One giant eye. One massive tear. One very dead foe.
Polyphemus is one of the most iconic and devastating damage-enhancing items in The Binding of Isaac, a massive eyeball that replaces Isaac's tears with a single, enormous projectile. Its name and design draw from the Cyclops of Greek mythology, specifically the son of Poseidon, known for his single giant eye. In the game, this artifact dramatically increases damage per shot while drastically reducing fire rate, turning Isaac into a slow but overwhelmingly powerful force that can obliterate most enemies with a single hit.

Lore & Background
In the twisted basement beneath Isaac's home, the child's tears are his only weapon against the horrors that crawl from the shadows. Polyphemus is not merely an item—it is a fragment of a forgotten myth, a cyclopean eye that grants its bearer the terrible strength of a giant. When Isaac clutches this pulsing orb, his own eye bulges and his tears become a single, slow-moving sphere of pure destruction, capable of crushing multiple foes in its path. The eye seems to whisper of ancient battles and lonely caves, where one wrong step meant being devoured by a monster with a single, unblinking gaze.
In Their Own Story
Isaac stumbled into a chamber where the floor was slick with something dark and warm. In the center, on a pedestal of bone, sat a single eye—larger than his head, its pupil a void that seemed to drink the light. He reached out, and the eye dissolved into his own, merging with his flesh. When he blinked, his vision swam, and when he cried, his tear was a boulder that shattered the first monster it struck, the impact shaking the walls. The other creatures fled, but Isaac knew: he was no longer a small boy. He was a giant in a child's skin.
Reader's Guide
Polyphemus is a high-risk, high-reward item that fundamentally changes how Isaac fights. It multiplies damage by a large factor (commonly +4 damage, with a further multiplier on tear size), but reduces fire rate to about a third of normal. The tear becomes huge, piercing through enemies and obstacles, and can hit multiple targets in a line. This makes it devastating against clustered foes or bosses with large hitboxes, but leaves Isaac vulnerable to fast or numerous enemies due to the slow firing speed. In-world, the artifact is believed to be the actual eye of a Cyclops, torn from its socket and imbued with lingering power. It is wielded by Isaac when he finds it in treasure rooms or secret areas, and its effect is permanent for that run. The eye physically replaces Isaac's left eye, causing it to bulge grotesquely. Players who synergize Polyphemus with items that add tear effects (like piercing, homing, or splitting) can create some of the most powerful combinations in the game, such as the infamous 'Brimstone + Polyphemus' synergy that fires a massive laser beam.
Did You Know?
- Polyphemus is one of the few items that can cause Isaac's tears to become larger than his own head, visually reflecting the damage increase.
- The item's name and design are a direct reference to the Cyclops Polyphemus from Homer's Odyssey, though the game adds no explicit lore connection beyond the name.
- When combined with the item 'Brimstone', Polyphemus creates a laser beam that is both wider and deals significantly more damage per tick than either item alone.
- Polyphemus was present in the original Flash version of The Binding of Isaac and has remained a fan-favorite damage item across all subsequent expansions.
